Monument of Water (Monument of Harai river, Monument of water, Monument of water works expansion)

DESCRIPTION

① Harai river monument (Kumano shrine)
In Anei 6 (1777), Kan-emon Sugiki solved the problem of water shortage by having water pipes (bamboo gutter) laid from the Izumisawa water bank to supply water. Originally, the monument was located near Akasaka bridge but during the war, it was thought that it might be buried in the mud of the river, so it was moved to the current Gongendō water filtration site.

② Water Monument
Responding to the shortage of drinking water, Shiogama initiated construction to irrigate water from Kasuga, Rifu town. It started in Meiji 23 (1890) and was completed in Meiji 45 (1945). It cost 150,000 yen in total. The name of the participants and the record of the project were engraved in the inscription. There is also a monument to the water works expansion next to Kumano shrine.
