Monument of Shishizaki

DESCRIPTION

Shishizaki was one of the eight famous “Hassaki” coasts. It was known for the picturesque scenery of Shiogama, located in the junction between Chiganoura and Matsushima (around the current Shiogama fish market). It disappeared in the late 30s of the Showa period (1950s). The monument was built in Bunka 7 (1810) by Kanenori Iwa who was a Confucian scholar and a doctor in Shiogama. He requested poets and writers in Kyoto to express the beauty of the scenery via Chinese poem. The monument is located on the site of the current prefectural fishing port office.
