Monument of harbor construction

DESCRIPTION

In Keio 3 (1867), a fire destroyed much of the town and Shiogama was in strong decline. It temporally lost protection (Discontinuation of Jokyo-no-tokurei) from the domain of Date after the Meiji Restoration. Nobody helped to dredge the sailing route, and the shallow bay filled with sand, and ceased to function. Then Yuji Kikuchi, a village chief, volunteered with other villagers to plan reclamation. Together they dredged the sea route themselves. In Meiji 15 (1882), the construction started with a donation of 6,000 yen and 17 volunteer workers. The construction was finished in May of Meiji 18 (1885), and this monument was built to commemorate it. In Meiji 42 (1967), it was moved from near old Shiogama station to the front of the current City Hall.
