Hyakumanben-memorial monument

DESCRIPTION

In the Edo period, Sabusawa flourished as a port for shipping rice. In Sabusawa temple, virtuous and renowned priests had lived and prayed for generations for marine safety and other things. The memorial monument (140 cm high, 85 cm long, made in the Kamakura period) is evidence of this. Devoted islanders still chant the Nenbutsu of Hyakumanben. There is also a “Monument of Nihyakumanben” on the island.
