文治鉄灯（ぶんじてっとう）

扉に「文治三年七月十日和泉三郎忠衡敬白」と銘文が浮き彫りされ、平泉藤原秀衡の三男忠衡寄進の鉄灯。 芭蕉翁もこの鉄灯を見て感涙したことが知られますが、当時は宝燈形式であり、屋根、扉は後世の補修です。

Bunji metal lantern

DESCRIPTION

This lamp was donated by Tadahira, the third son of Hiraizumi Fujiwarano Hidehira. The inscription [3rd year of Bunji period, July 10th, Izumi Saburo] was engraved on the lamp’s door. This is known as the lamp that deeply moved the famous poet Matsuo Basho to tears. At that time, the lamp was in the Hoto style, but later the roof and door were repaired.
